I am very disappointed with this grinder. As a former Starbucks barista I wanted a coffee grinder that would grind beans finer than the regular household models. The machine would not work at all... and I had to return it and am hesitant about purchasing a new one. Very very poor quality, lack of insturctions included in the box and no problem shooting guide in box. Instead you had to go to a website. My computer is not in my kitchen and it is a huge hassle to have to do that. So all in all, I would not buy this one again but buy one that is more commerical grade with better insturctional support and accessible customer service.
I've been using this coffee grinder for over 5 years. It has survived a power surge and more than one espresso machine. I went through an average of 2 cheap coffee grinders a year before I finally invested in this little beast of a coffee grinder. This product does not spread coffee all over the counter because it has an anti-static feature that works well. I would recommend this item any day. It is one of my most-loved kitchen appliances, and I would buy it again in a heartbeat, but I don't think I'll need to any time soon!
Excellent burr mechanism. Grind adjustment is easy to use. First shipment the hopper bin (plastic) was broken. Starbucks sent me another grinder, wasn't easy but they did give me an extra 5% off so they made it worth my while & i continue to be impressed with their service.
This was a major upgrade from my previous burr grinder. Super consistent grind and very fast. The opening fits a portafilter no problem. I purchased the "portaholder" from a different website (wasn't on Starbucks store), but it's not really worth the money. It doesn't allow a portafilter in far enough to allow the grinds to drop in the middle, so you have to take it out and shake it several times because the coffee all lands off to the back edge and is thus quite lopsided. By itself this is a wonderful grinder, functions and looks great!
We enjoy espresso and like to make it home (in addition to purchasing it from our local Starbucks cafe). When my old burr grinder stopped working, I went to the Starbucks' website to see if they had a replacement. I did some research and found that the Virtuoso had good reviews. That, combined with a reasonable price, convinced me to order it. So glad that I did - the grinder is easy to adjust and looks nice on the counter. More importantly, it grinds the beans just right. After some experimenting, I found that #3 setting creates the best grind for espresso; creates a nice crema and delicious taste. Also pleased with the speed of shipping. In short, excellent grinder and customer service. Would definitely recommend.
Bought this after having problems with a competitor's burr grinder. I learned the hard way to only adjust the burrs when it's running. During the first grind, I slowly adjusted the settings from #40 to #15. Threw those grounds out. Then ran a small batch at the #15 setting. It was the most perfect cup of espresso I've had in six months.
There are many variables in a good cup of espresso, and in this case the only variable that changed was the grinder. I'm hopeful that this grinder will keep up the good work.
- It doesn't stand evenly. For something that costs this much, you'd think it wouldn't wobble.
- Had trouble getting it going the first time. It's a little tricky to set the funnel the first time. And yes, I dumped the entire funnel full of beans during the process. Joy!
- Seems like it's only feasible to grind into the container. The machine has no depth to maintain the mess of grinds overflowing from the filter basket.
But...it seems to grind really, really well. So I can live with all that.
This grinder was an upgrade for me, trying to find a cost effective way to make espresso at home. The fine grind options on this grinder immediately improved my ability to pull good espresso shots at home.
Key buying items for me were:
-grind fine enough for espresso
-to be able to grind into a bin or a portafilter
- be able to fit under the cabinets in the kitchen.
The static free bin works very well. Static in the ground coffee from my old grinder was a mess and a problem.
I have worked for Starbucks for 4 years. I am a shift supervisor and a Coffee Master.
Excellent grind uniformity and is very quiet.
One small problem. The silicon feet that the unit rests on are not unifom in thickness so the grinder rocks on its base. I will probably sand them down.
Great blurring blades. Fantastic consistency
Luv it luv it
I use it to make my weekly mix of 1/2 8 oclock regular and 1/2 columbian. Takes no time at all now.
