Starbucks Reserve® Hawaii Ka'u

The Ka'u region, which neighbors Kona on the island of Hawaii, has been producing coffee for only 20 years on just 400 acres of land. But already the beans are making a lasting impression, winning awards for quality and astounding flavors.

Cultivated on the temperate slopes of Mauna Loa, abounding in rich volcanic soil, these beans are hand-selected and processed on small family farms devoted to Hawaiian tradition. The resulting taste is delicate and deliciously tropical.

Of the thousands of coffees we encounter in our search for the best, only a precious few are deemed exceptional enough to become Starbucks Reserve® coffees, offered only for limited times at select stores.

Kaʻu is a region on the Big Island of Hawaii, neighboring the highly acclaimed Kona growing region. In Kaʻu, small coffee farms sit on the southwest slopes of Mauna Loa, nestled in verdant valleys where they are tended predominantly by former sugar plantation owners. The Hawaii Kaʻu region is recognized among the finest coffees in the world, winning the 2011 SCAA Coffee of the Year award.

Awful: worst reserve I've tried It was pretty much undrinkable. I've tried more than 20 Starbucks reserve coffees so far, so I figured I'd like this one just the same. It had an overwhelmingly stale nut flavor, coupled with a weird, biting raw coconut flavor. The coffee had enough bite and acidity to tear into my throat, and I couldn't finish more than a couple ounces of it. 2014 hasn't been a great year for Starbucks Reserve coffees..they've either been bland, non-distinct, or just sad like this one. Hawaiian Bliss I love coffee from the Ka'u region of Hawaii and this particular coffee stands head and shoulders above the rest. The aroma as soon as you open the bag lets you know you are in for something special. I like to brew my coffee in a French press and this coffee shines when brewed in a French press. I smell toasted sugar and a hint of citrus when brewing this coffee. I taste a butterscotch sweetness along with a mild nutiness. There's just a bit of citrus in the finish. All the flavors and aromas combine to make this a superbly balanced coffee. No cream or sugar is needed with this coffee. Exquisite coffees like this one make me so proud to be a partner. When I think about all the love and care that went into every step of bringing this coffee to our customers I feel privileged to be a part of a company so committed to excellence and doing business the right way.
