A bold blend of coffee from Thailand with lingering, earthy spiciness in the finish.
Availability:  This item is in stock.
Starbucks® Muan Jai Blend

We created our first blend featuring Thai coffee to celebrate the exceptional quality of beans grown in the hills of northern Thailand. Peppery, full-bodied and balanced with lingering earthy spiciness, this coffee represents the best of the region, and our farm-direct purchasing promotes the economic well-being of those who grow it. In the dialect of hill tribe farmers "muan jai" means wholehearted happiness—a sense of pride you'll taste in every cup. Available only in its origin country and exclusively in the US online at Starbucks Store.

Did You Know?

This coffee debuted as a Thailand exclusive in 2003. Muan Jai means "wholehearted happiness" in Kum-Mueang, a language of northern Thailand. The Thai component of this coffee is produced by coffee farmers from the hill tribes of Northern Thailand and representatives from the hill tribes attended the launch event of this coffee in Thailand.

Recipe for great coffee

  1. Use cold, filtered water and a clean machine.
  2. Grind beans just before brewing:
    • Course for coffee press
    • Medium for automatic drip
  3. Measure 2 tbsp (10 g) ground coffee for every 6 fl oz (180 ml) water.

To help preserve that fresh flavor, keep this bag sealed tight in a cabinet (not in the refrigerator) and brew within a week of opening.

Each coffee requires slightly different amounts of time and temperature during the roasting process to create a cup at its peak of aroma, acidity, body and flavor. We classify our coffees in three roast profiles so you can easily find your desired flavor and intensity.

  • Blonde: Blonde-roasted coffees have a shorter roast time, lighter body and mellow flavors.
  • Medium: Medium-roasted coffees are balanced with smooth and rich flavors.
  • Dark: Dark-roasted coffees feature a fuller body and robust, bold flavors.

Smooth

Great taste. I like coffee on the stronger side, Muan Jai Blend is my favorite. Just strong enough, and super smooth. When I place an order, I always order two packages of this blend. Please keep this coffee!

Nice Kick - But Not Fresh

By Picasso5

Although the flavor is nice with a bit of a spicy kick at the end, the beans were very dry. I had to mix them with a French Roast that had oil in the beans to make the flavor pop more and taste fresher. I will not purchase this again. I still haven't found anything better than your French Roast.

Starbucks +

The taste of usual Starbucks coffee, hint of spices .... and then a rice after taste. A unique twist of flavor that you wouldn't notice until few seconds after your last sip. I find this better than some Starbucks Reserve I tried.

We have purchased many different types of Starbucks whole beans products. This is the best of all even the reserve products because of it's deep roasted flavor and smooth tasting aspects of this brand. We just hope they keep this brand availible long term!

The best oriental brew that Starbucks carries. My whole family loved it with a smile, a raised eyebrow, & a wow! Now that's good! No bite & wonderful smooth notes of yumminess... great as a french press or drip. Love it.

Move over Sumatra!

By Dahl

from Kalispell, MT

See all my reviews

I know, everybody loves Sumatra and I am probably committing blasphemy by saying that I have grown a little tired of it. It was suggested that I take the next step and try Komodo Dragon; my impressions are that it tastes like I am licking a cedar tree after a forest fire. Some may desire that taste; I don't care for it personally. I pressed onward, searching for a new "bold" favorite.

I ordered a couple bags of Muan Jai on my last purchase and I do not regret it. It really is a treat for the senses! Upon opening the bag, there is a deep spice note, yet it isn't cedar-y like Komodo Dragon.

My preferred method of brewing is the pour over, as I feel it creates a much cleaner tasting cup of coffee than with a press. Water boiling in the electric kettle, coffee ground and placed in the pourover system sitting neatly on top of my favorite ceramic mug, and I am ready to go.

As I bloom the grounds, the scent of stonefruits, like plums and cherries, comes alive. A few minutes later, after brewing is finished, I take my first sip. Spicy, complex, full bodied, and smooth; not even a hint of smoke, as is common with other Asian coffees due to their preferred roasting profile.

This coffee would go amazing with a slice of coffee cake, warm cobbler, or now that I think about it.... bread pudding! Yum... It definitely lives up to its name, meaning "wholehearted happiness." I think this will be what I serve with dessert at Thanksgiving this year. I wish this was brewed and sold in stores in the United States.
