Cape Verde Fogo Island
Located in the remote Cape Verde archipelago off Africa’s western coast, the volcanic island of Fogo is characterized by rocks and black sand. Incredibly, a coffee varietal has survived in this desolate landscape for 300 years—and inspired us to join a movement to reignite the local coffee industry. Though plants on Fogo yield fewer coffee cherries, distinct flavors seem concentrated into those harvested.
In fact, we were so struck by the flavor that when presented with the opportunity to take home all the island’s washed coffee, we couldn’t pass it up. It’s an intensely sweet, full-bodied cup with mild florals and sparkling acidity—every bit as remarkable as its distant island home.
